Sam puts on a clinic

We all Heard about the comp from a few guys in the fishing trade, we all had previously fished a few other flatty comps together and in separate teams but were pleasantly surprised with some unique rules surrounding pre-fish and the general comp itinerary which really appealed to our team members. Once entries opened we locked in and were super keen to see how the comp would run! Given what we heard we had high expectations- these were well and truely blown out of the water for what would go down as one of the most fun, social and competitive events of the year and a definite lock for all future events

We had big plans to head up river and try start the comp with some kicker fish, we knew that catching these were key to having a good comp, with no pre fish pressure and being the first morning of the comp we we’re hoping to find some more active less pressured fish. Our morning was slow but we managed a couple of flatties with Sam getting a good fish in the high 70s, the first of what would be one of the greatest individual angler performances in a team event that we’ve been a part of.

Our afternoon was a little less productive, persisting for a big bite we missed a few fish and finished the day with with only 4 fish in the bag only two of which would be a part of our final result.

These fish still made a nice contribution to the teams division, with our division securing the VIP booth and a few drinks vouchers for scallywags resulting in some first night delight for Casey and Sam!

Day 2 started much the same as day one, captain pudge getting the boys back into reasonable condition with a couple of liquid IV’s, much needed! We decided to fish the bottom lake given day one’s results up river. Bakers bight, first thing. Sam quickly nailing a couple of 60cm fish in the first 20 minutes really set the tone for the day. Quickly followed up with a 60cm fish for Casey and a 20 minute fight with a meter long Mulloway, a highlight for our comp weekend.

Saturdays mandatory BBQ was outstanding, a testament to how well the comp ran was the fact that everyone stuck around had a feed and a few beers with nobody in a hurry to get back on the water - great company, laughs and great food for everyone.

Back on the water we ventured further in to Bakers, Sam nailed a few more good fish and Pudge nailed a 70cm fish all off the one flat!

The day continued and we ended up right down the front. Sam sticking a few more high 50s - 70cm fish filling out a very respectable bag! 8 of which were boated by Sam moving us right up the leaderboard!

The VIP booth and a VIP Limo ride from our accommodation to Scallywags was epic. More vouchers courtesy of another 1st place day in the teams division combined with some awful shot combinations from Will Bennet set us up for a huge night two. “Father flatty” giving everyone his blessings to have a big one was all we needed!

Very worse for wear but with no regrets Casey was pretty close to useless in the morning. Pudge and Sam got the ball rolling with a few more fish. Only one more in the 60s that would help our bag caught by Sam of course. A last minute chance at another good one with hooks pulling at the boat left us with only the one upgrade for the day. Cementing our spot in 6th position - 1cm behind 5th.

Happy with our efforts we all left the comp feeling the same! Wow what a weekend and what an event! We still talk about it every week counting down the days until the next one. Flattys need love too will be back with a vengeance eyeing off that number one spot as well as the Will Bennet award for “best on” at scallywags!
