The brief, in short

It’s not just a fishing comp. It’s the best weekendof the year.

Mallacoota in October. Boats on glass water before the sun’s properly up, flatties hitting the deck, cold ones at Scallys by sundown. The Flatty Classic bottles the lot: proper competition wrapped up in the best few days the Aussie coast has to offer. We could go on about the serenity, but you get the point.

Four waypoints to the weigh-in.

01

Rally your crew

Two to four anglers. Pick your team name, lock it in, pay in one go. Your spot is held the second you start.

02

Point it at Coota

Where the road literally runs out. Six or seven hours from Melbourne, and by the last bumpy few kays into town, a world away from the rest of it.

03

Fish the flats

Three days, catch-measure-release. Your ten best fish on the tape, longest total takes it. Simple as that.

04

Dock at Scallys

The bar over the boat ramp, half Black Pearl, half public bar. Huge gummy burgers, tiny beers, and every crew winding up here after dark to celebrate and exaggerate.

Frequently asked questions about the comp.

The Crew

Anyone who's keen for a flathead. Teams run two to four anglers, so it's you and whoever you can round up — mates, the in-laws, the bloke from the servo who reckons he's got a spot no one else knows about. You enter as a team, everyone aboard gets their name down before the first lines go in, and since it's fished out of boats you'll want one that's up to the weekend (the rules spell out the size and safety gear). One's too few and a dozen won't fit; somewhere between two and four is the sweet spot.
